Launched Orlando Magic Partnership
We expanded our presence in Central Florida by launching a partnership with the Orlando Magic and becoming the team’s Official Bank.

Reached $20 Billion in Assets
We had more than 900 employees and 31 banking locations from Miami-Dade County to Orlando making us one of the top 100 banking institutions in the United States in addition to being one of the largest community banks in the nation.

Acquired Executive National Bank
We completed our acquisition of Miami-based Executive National Bank (ENB). With this, our assets exceeded $17 billion. As Florida’s largest community bank, we assisted Floridians in navigating the pandemic with a $1 million COVID Relief Fund in 2020.

Sold Flagship Building and Moved to Miami Tower
We sold our longtime flagship building at 25 W. Flagler and relocated our operations teams to new offices in the iconic Miami Tower, designed by I.M. Pei.

Purchased TotalBank
We completed our first acquisition when we purchased Miami-based TotalBank for $529 million from Spain-based Grupo Santander.

Caja Madrid Was Sold
Caja Madrid, which was known as Bankia, sold their bank to Banco de Credito e Inversiones (BCI), based in Chile.

Voted Business of the Year
This achievement was given to us by the South Florida Business Journal.

Jorge Gonzalez Named President
After 23 years at Wachovia and its predecessors, Jorge Gonzalez became our President. Under his leadership, every line of business grew, and he became CEO in 2011. By 2012, our bank had $4 billion in assets and was rapidly adding new banking centers.

Caja Madrid Purchased City National Bank of Florida
Caja Madrid, a Spanish banking consortium, purchased City National Bank of Florida for $1.28 billion. Soon after, Leonard L. Abess, Jr. departed and famously gave $60 million of the proceeds to around 400 employees.

Assets Topped $2.75 Billion
We continued growing in Southeast Florida and expanded into the Orlando area. Today, our name proudly sits atop this landmark Orlando building as a symbol of our commitment to Central Florida.

Leonard L. Abess, Jr. Became Chairman of the Board, CEO and President
Leadership was transferred from Leonard Abess Sr. to his son, Leonard L. Abess, Jr. At the age of 35, he was one of the youngest bank chairpersons in the U.S.

Consolidated its Banks into Branches
Florida’s banks were permitted to establish branch offices. So, we became the first banking institution in the state to consolidate its banks into branches.

Seven Banks Added in Dade County
By 1995, we were one of the largest family-owned and operated community banks in the U.S. with nine offices in Miami-Dade County and one in Broward.

City National Bank of South Dade Opened
This location opened in a Kendall shopping center. By then, Kendall, which was once a horse country and a farmland, was now booming as a Greater Miami’s suburb.

Employed a Computer for the First Time
Our commitment to computers grew as we became one of the area’s pioneers in banking. In the early 2000s, we became the first Florida-based bank with an app.

Moved to New, Iconic Building at 25 West Flagler
We moved into a five-story Miami jewel with a state-of-the-art design by modernist architect Edwin T. Reeder.

City National Bank of Coral Gables Opened
This banking center became the first to use the name, “City National.”

Became a Federal Reserve System Member
Abess Sr. and de Hirsch Meyer received a commercial charter, the Industrial National Bank, and renamed it: Industrial National Bank of Miami.

Purchased Industrial Savings Bank
These same investors bought Industrial Savings Bank and converted it to Industrial National Bank.

North Shore Bank Opened
Leonard Abess Sr. and Baron de Hirsch Meyer, who were longtime friends and business partners, founded North Shore Bank on 71st Street in Miami Beach. At the time, it had only $500,000 in capital.
